Finger Lakes Sign & Design Now Does Custom Full Dye Sublimation Apparel
Exciting news! Our shop in Horseheads, NY is now doing full sublimation apparel! This is a giant leap forward for our apparel department. Below is a list of frequently asked questions regarding everthing from "What is full sublimation" to "how long does the process take".
"What is "Full Sublimation"?
Full Sublimation is a printing process by which dyes are printed onto a transfer medium with a specially prepared printer. Thereafter, those dyes are then transferred from the medium to an object or garment under the heat and pressure delivered by a commercial heat press. Sublimation only works on garments made of polyester, or on specialty objects made of polyester or given a polyester coating. When the heat and pressure are applied, the dye on the transfer medium sublimates, or becomes a gas, and is then absorbed into the polyester itself; the print is actually a part of the garment/coating. It doesn’t fade easily, wear, or have any texture or weight.
"Is Sublimation better than screen print?"
Both sublimation and screen printing have their pros and cons. Sublimation is a more versatile printing process. It's almost limitless when it comes to printing images on to apparel. For a project that requires multiple colors or gradients sublimation is definitely the way to go. Sublimation also opens up doors for more custom personalization for jerseys or other garments because there is no need to make individual screens for every variation. For something simple like a one or two color print or something that is on a cotton or cotton blend fabric screen print is the winner.
"How long does the process take?"
For our sublimation production we are usually scheduling 3-4 weeks from order to completion/delivery.
"Is it expensive?"
In short, no. Sublimation is a pretty cost effective process when you compare it to other apparel application methods. You can get much more customization for your money with sublimation.
"What types of garments can you print?"
We can print anything as long as its a polyester material
